Who is Diver's Alert Network?
Divers Alert Network (DAN) is a non-profit medical and research
organization dedicated to the safety and health of recreational scuba divers
and is
located at Duke University Medical Center. DAN is supported by
individual
divers and
by every
diver association
around the world.
Founded in 1980, DAN has served as a lifeline for the scuba industry by
operating diving's only 24-hour emergency hotline, a lifesaving service for
injured divers. Additionally, DAN operates a diving medical information line,
conducts vital diving medical research, and develops and provides a number of
educational programs for everyone from beginning divers to medical
professionals.
What is the
Dive
Medicine for
DiversProgram?
When you
want to know
more than
just basic
first aid
techniques,
Dive
Medicine for
Divers is
your next
step.
Ultimately,
more
knowledge
and a better
understanding
of how our
bodies react
to the
pressures
and stresses
of diving
lead to
safer divers
as we
understand
our
limitations
and the
limitations
of the
situation.
Created as
an
educational
program to
answer many
questions
divers ask,
this new
modular
program,
Dive
Medicine for
Divers Level
1, includes
sections on
fitness to
dive, safety
planning and
basic
physical
examinations.
The course

first three
modules are:
Basic
Examinations
— this
module
teaches how
to evaluate
a diver’s
respiratory
and cardiac
function
using a
stethoscope.
Fitness to
Dive — this
module
discusses
what it
means to be
physically
fit enough
to dive and
the medical
conditions
that can
keep divers
out of the
water. There
is also a
discussion
of basic
ear-clearing
techniques.
Safety
Planning —
this module
includes
processes
and
procedures
to make your
dives safer,
but also
discusses
how to deal
with the
aftermath of
a dive
accident,
including
taking care
of the
diver’s
equipment
for an
